By early evening, the investigation had ground to a near total halt. There had been no new intelligence, no new ransom notes from the kidnappers. The street camera footage from Cromer Road had come in but showed nothing more than a man in a black jacket with his hood pulled down low over his face slipping the folded ransom note through Joy Cracken’s letter box. Kaplan had also tried locating footage from neighbouring cameras to try to identify the man elsewhere. She had found one camera with a distant shot of the man in black walking past, but that was all. With frustration being the main result of the day, Hogarth found himself keen for a better result at home. He still postured to himself about whether or not he would eventually sleep with Honour, but a coy smile crept across his face every time he remembered finding her in his bed that morning. It seemed the girl was determined to make him crack, and Hogarth was less and less sure that he wanted to resist. There were a few residual doubts in mind. Doubts about the timing of her arrival in his life. Doubts about her dealings with the man in leather. It would have been wise to look into it before anything happened between them. Even without her surname, he could have tried a hunt for her on the database, but the idea of doing so behind her back was beginning to feel like a personal betrayal. The man in leather seemed a safer bet. He needed to know whether Honour was dealing with a criminal. In the course of his career, Hogarth had crossed a great many lines already, but sleeping with a criminal was a line he could never cross. Then there was the small challenge of how to find out what he wanted to know without alerting Palmer. With her already acting twitchy, the last thing he needed was her acting up about his private life. Thus, Hogarth began to formulate a plan. If his suspicions were right – and the man in the bad jacket was somehow connected to Ilford, then perhaps it was best that he spoke to Ilford himself. Involving DCI Melford seemed unnecessary – risky even - unless he wanted twitchiness on all sides at once.

But that was a job for tomorrow. With any luck, before then there would be some movement in the Cracken case, too. Maybe a fresh ransom demand, or some unusual movement would be spotted close to where the man was being held.

Hogarth was eyeing the office clock, wondering how Honour had spent her day, when the office telephone broke his trance. Palmer was the one to pick up the call.

“Yes, DS Palmer speaking. Why, what’s up?”

Gradually, Palmer turned to face Hogarth. The look in her eyes turned from one of mild surprise to incredulity. After a few moments, Hogarth could no longer take the suspense.

“What is it? What’s going on?”

“He’s been found?” Palmer replied, her words edged with sheer disbelief.
